MADRONE TREE Don't hold your breath - I heard. I was startled, the trail was empty. Not a soul to breathe among the greening hills, but my own. It was the wind, I realized, whispering this reminder, while combing the blue ridges. I walked along a small creek, and stopped to harvest some oyster mushrooms, such a bounty, but already getting old on a fallen trunk. Then kept going, as I was hoping for a blessing from my favorite madrone tree. I prayed to receive medicine from this majestic being, a sculptural, wooden testament to life's capricious twists and turns. Broken limbs, burnt limbs, missing limbs, and among them, some full of fruit. I played my flute and then danced with her, the sun on my back, my shadow caressing the wild map of her skin. Half undressed, patches of black charcoal, next to thin brown layers, papyrus-like, pealing away rolled like cinnamon. And then those naked, pink areas, so fleshy in their amazing softness... On the highest branches, a quiet flock of big, pale doves disrupted my awe, by showering me with tiny white feathers, and impossibly bright, ruby red berries. A baptismal gift - to nourish soul and belly - they said. I ate a few, as a sacrament, and collected some for later. Then, scared by some unseen, unheard danger, the birds took off, leaving a trail of angelic fluttering, and flying straight into the setting sun, until I could no longer see them. I thanked all beings for their medicine, and started the walk downhill.

What’s cooking?WILD SALAD!Powerful, beautiful, fresh, magical and medicinal… All respectfully foraged; dandelions, oxalis, madrone berries, rosemary blooms, and more. Still killing your “weeds”? Think again, and re-learn, re-claim some ancient wisdom, from the edible and healing wild herbs. They have been part of my personal healing of “incurable” things, and are part of my diet, surely one of the secrets for never getting a cold, flu, or worse ;)

Cataclysmic beauty, and wisdom of Madrone’s medicine. Whispered on the fluttering wake of a flock of doves, over the blue ridges. From my ears to yours, a magical gift, on this new moon… Blessed Holidays.
